Portland's Premier Exterior Remodeling Contractor

The home above is a classic example of Portland's Craftsman style. This particular renovation project included cedar siding replacement, a cedar trim package, rebuilding the entire front porch to its original specifications, tongue & groove cedar porch ceiling (stained) building a back porch cover, an IPE deck and painting the entire home. This client wanted everything to be historically accurate and had an original picture of the house from the early 1900's that we were able to reference to ensure that the house looked like it did when it was originally built.

What We Use

There are many modern building products available to us today that we can use to emulate the siding used on craftsman homes in the early 1900's. At LRS we use only HardiePlank and cedar siding as we don't find vinyl or other siding types provide the quality needed to restore these homes at a high-level.

Cedar siding is what was originally used on craftsman homes built in the early 1900's and we can still get the same cedar products today to match the look and feel of the original craftsman homes.

The Benefits of Cedar: Cedar has a fit & finish quality and a warmth that is difficult to achieve with other siding types. Cedar has tannins that are created in the tree as it ages giving it natural protections against fungus, rot, and insects making it the best natural siding choice in the Pacific Northwest for many years. Many historical districts require the use of cedar on older homes in Portland to ensure that the look and feel of the neighborhood is not disrupted.

Key Installation Points For Cedar Siding
If being painted, the siding must be primed with an oil based primer to seal in the tannins. If a latex primer is used the tannins will bleed through the new paint job (tannins look like a dark oil or syrup), and all cut edges must be spray primed with an oil based primer for best results. Lastly, cedar is always face nailed with stainless steel 8D fasteners for maximum durability.

Hardieplank Siding Replacement Contractor | Portland, OR

Hardieplank Siding: HardiePlank is the most popular fibercement siding used for siding replacement in the Pacific Northwest. HardiePlank has many different product lines which allow us to restore older homes to their original specifications while getting the added advantage of a cement based siding.

The Benefits of Hardieplank: HardiePlank is a cement based siding which is dimensionally stable (very little expansion and contraction). Due to this limited expansion/contraction it holds paint on average 30-40% longer than cedar if a quality exterior latex coating is used. Hardie is also rot, fire, woodpecker and insect resistant making it a great choice for PNW homes. HardiePlank also has a multitude of product lines allowing us to carefully match the style of the original cedar that was used on these craftsman renovations. Many companies only use a few of the product lines available to them which doesn't match up to the original look of a craftsman home. This limitation often diminishes the potential ROI instead of adding value to the home.

Lifetime Remodeling Systems specializes in older home renovations and takes great pride in not cutting corners. To learn more about us and our processes download our Information Packet PDF for the Exterior Division.
